Types of Vaginismus, Risks and Sexual Coldness

Vaginismus is a sexual dysfunction problem that is encountered all around the world as well as in Turkey. This problem, which arises from different causes, has different types. For people who have a certain way of life, in their later years, the frequency to encounter vaginismus increases. Vaginismus, in definition, is a very different concept than sexual coldness.

Terminology

Primary Vaginismus

It is the condition where sexual intercourse has never taken place before.

Secondary Vaginismus

It is the condition where vaginismus develops posterior to a sexual or genital trauma (birth giving with complications, miscarriage, abortion, loutish gynecological examination, abuse or rape) before which a healthy sexual relation was possible (recent onset).

Apareunia

It is the inability of a person to have sex due to certain obstacles. Vaginismus is also kind of an apareunia.

Dyspareunia

It is to “feel pain” during sexual intercourse. Sometimes the underlying reason beneath secondary vaginismus might be dyspareunia. However, if you have a painful sexual intercourse, the reason might not always be vaginismus.

Vulvar Vestibulitis Syndrome (VVS)

It is a syndrome that refers to the complaints such as vaginismus, dyspareunia and anorgasmia (inability to achieve an orgasm) caused as a result of extreme sensuality at the lower part of the hymen.

Vulvar Vestibulit Syndrome (VVS) can be definitely diagnosed after a gynecological examination where the area observed with rashes and edema at the entrance of the vagina is touched with a cotton tipped stick to confirm that the area is extremely sensitive to pain, suspecting on a patient’s own account about her sexual intercourse being very painful or not being able to have one at all.

The cause of Vulvar Vestibulit Syndrome is not yet fully known. However, in its treatment, the removal of this area by a simple surgical operation may simply do away with the problem completely (Partial Hymenotomy Operation). These operations which are conducted with mostly local and sometimes general anesthesia, in a span of 10 to 15 minutes are effectual in resolving the problem.

What is the difference between sexual coldness and vaginismus?

Vaginismus is a different concept than sexual coldness which is another sexual dysfunction. In vaginismus sexual desire is generally normal, but it might have increased or decreased as well.

In sexual coldness, although the feelings of sin and shame are important, the main problem is defined by a person’s inability to take pleasure from a sexual relation.

On the other hand, in vaginismus, there is not a reluctance to enter into a sexual relation at the beginning, but the feeling to be harmed during the sexual intercourse surfaces.

In a woman suffering from vaginismus, there is sexual desire and lubrication in the vagina, but although desired the sexual intercourse cannot be achieved. However, in time, with women who suffer from vaginismus or feel pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia),sexual reluctance might develop.

Most of the women who suffer from vaginismus have never had sexual intercourse, thus they are still virgins (primary vaginismus). Yet with some women, there might be the case where sexual intercourse has been achieved before but with a condition developed afterwards, it cannot be achieved anymore (secondary vaginismus).

Sexual coldness might develop as a result of problems such as heart diseases, hypertension, glaucoma and rheumatical diseases.

Again, “secret rages” held against the spouse and kept in the self without sharing, might cause sexual coldness in time. Rarely, in certain cases, sexual coldness and vaginismus can be observed simultaneously. In this case, it is important to go down to the basis of the problem.
